Latino racism… From The Herald-Sun, another one of those eye-opening surveys of Latino (i.e. Mexican) racism:

What surprised us most was the high level of negative stereotypes on the part of Latino immigrants," said Paula McClain, a professor of political science at Duke University and the study's lead author. "We were also, I guess, pleasantly surprised at the low level of stereotypes of blacks held by whites in Durham. Less than 10 percent of our sample of whites held negative stereotypes of blacks. And that blacks were more tolerant of Latino immigrants than Latino immigrants were of blacks."….

A majority of Latino immigrants, 58.9 percent, said few or almost no blacks are hardworking. Nearly one-third said few if any blacks are easy to get along with. And nearly 57 percent said few if any blacks could be trusted.

But Mexicans are pikers compared to South Americans, who in my experience look down on Mexicans with considerable disdain.  A friend of mine was once married to a Brazilian, who after getting a high and tight buzz was dismayed by the sudden notice local Mexicans took of him.  To his consternation he was subject of much comradery and street tidings because they thought he was one of them (his particular hair style was and is popular with local Mexicans).  In my own personal dealings I have found time and again that South Americans do not hesitate to denigrate Mexcians amongst each other and to Caucasians.

A Mexican-American contractor I once hired (but only once – he was young, stupid, and incapable) once caused my eyebrow to arch when he casually referred to making an inelegant but serviceable repair as "nigger-rigging".  He laughed at my mildly stunned reaction.  Not something one will hear whites say.

These are merely anecdotes, of course, but the Duke-UNC study confirms what everyone I know in Dallas seems to have concluded:  Mexican immigrants don't get along well with blacks (ironically, Mexican citizens almost unanimously regard whites as lazy and racist).

Then there's this, equally amusing finding:

More than three-quarters, 78 percent, of Latinos said they have more in common with whites than blacks. But whites said they have more in common with blacks – 45.9 percent, as opposed to 22.2 percent saying they have more in common with Latinos.

I moved to Dallas from Minneapolis-St. Paul, which has a small (roughly 10%) black minority.  Blacks in Minneapolis are extremely hypersensitive and vocal  – doubtless spurred on by the sanctimonious and self-flagellating version of liberalism that prevails in Minnesota.  So from the start the blacks I met in Dallas were far more personable and, making up a much greater portion of the local population, considerably more relaxed around other races.  I quickly found that I responded far more positively to the blacks I encountered here than to Hispanics.

One obvious reason is that blacks are much more noticeably American in custom and manner, and they are also more open and friendly.  Most Hispanics I see are clinging to a lot of cultural baggage (it loses its exotic flavor when you are surrounded by it) and have an attitude (bordering on clannishness) that does not endear them to anyone but their own kind.  (I currently live in a Hispanic neighborhood, so I see plenty of it.)  Of course this is speaking very generally – the differences noted are relative, and many exceptions exist – but I personally prefer the company of Texas blacks even to that of Texas native whites, who have their own issues I will save for a less busy time. Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - 6:13 PM
